I had no idea what to expect going into this movie. While I don't think Josh Duhamel is a bad
actor, I wasn't sure he could sustain a movie with depth. I was pleasantly surprised, not only with his performance in Scenic Route, the movie as a whole. The great writing helped things immensely, especially the part when the two characters go back and forth about their opinions of each other's lives and then Duhamel's character confesses some things about his marriage. From that point on forward, I was invested in the characters and their relationship. As for the cinematography, the dusty, dry remoteness of the desert was captured so well that I found myself getting incredibly thirsty throughout the picture. I enjoyed it. And though some may not like it, I liked the ending as well.
I am a big fan of end-of-the-world type science fiction movies, so I was looking foward to seeing
this film on the big screen. I was not diappointed....until the last act.
The special effects were pretty good and definitely did not detract from the movie at all. The same can be said about the acting; it was good as well. It was nice to see actors in a horror movie whose performances I could take seriously and that were believable. They worked the dramatic elements of the film well.
Most of the problems I had with the film came toward the end...as in the last thirty minutes. This is where the story just goes completely awry. One scene that I am sure was supposed to be particularly poignant actually aroused laughter from myself as well as most other audience members. In all, the last act of the movie just got "hokey", overly sentimental, and pretty far fetched. One thing I did like about the last act, however, was that it avoided that classically sappy Hollywood happy ending.
