Back to the nearby Santa Fe Station Casino Theater for another live HD performance from the Met
Opera House. Today, Aida, grand opera at its grandest. The usual great Met performance, with the orchestra in top form, the chorus at its best, even the corps de ballet in perfect synchronization as seen from an overhead camera, plus a cast of hundreds, making it truly spectacular. A stellar international cast with unusually powerful voices: Violeta Urmana (Lithuanian) as Aida, Dolora Zajick (USA –Oregon-Nevada) as Amneris, and Johan Botha (South African) as Radames. The women were overweight and not attractive – far from what one would envision as being sexually desirable -- but boy, could they sing! In opera it doesn’t matter what you look like – it’s how you sound. Unfortunately for those who did NOT attend, and there were many empty seats, they missed something very special. My wife and I enjoyed it immensely.

Yes, I enjoyed The Audition immensely. When I was young (a long time ago) I well remember joining
my father listening to the Metropolitan Opera Audition live on the radio every spring.
I was impressed this time by the young talent that bodes well for the future of opera. I also found the film interesting showing the genuine emotion and apprehension of the singers leading up to and including the final day.
I hope a similar film will be shown next year.
The opera was excellent. My wife and I gave high marks to the cast, particularly to Patricia
Racette and Marcello Giordani, who performed so very well. Patricia's voice and acting were surpurb as was Marcello's. Also I can never say enough about the MET Orchestra. I think it is the finest musical organization -- even better than most symphony orchestras. The MET has to play for long hours and usually twice a day, with music by different composers, unlike most symphonies that play for just a few hours and not every day.
Please keep bringing us good operas. Next year's offerings look very promising and I look forward to seeing them. I'm only sorry that none of Wagner' "Ring Cycle", that close out this season, are on this year's calendar.
