Saw this film opening day and house packed. Twas a bit let down by "Les Mis". Disliked the director's choice to do so many prolonged head shots of the stars singing and did not like the use of handheld camera, [ bouncing up and down ], in some running scenes, Musically: the leads did surprisingly well but when the cast members who hailed from the Broadway production sang, well, the contrast was quite noticeable, Locations, scenery, costumes, and overall production value was impressive. I'd give this film 3.5-4 stars. I do not think appropriate for children due to adult content of some scenes, violence and adult themes. WARNING! May be surrounded by "Les Mis" aficionados who will softly sing along with whole score or "Les Mis" newbies who will weep copiously. [Oh, special kudos to Anne Hathaway for her commitment to her role and outstanding, {Oscar worthy?}, performance.] Know show? Look for a delicious surprise or two. ...(read more)

Musically- the singing was surprisingly good by leads, [recognizing it was approached from acting viewpoint] but when Broadway singers sang the contrast was quite noticeable, Scenery, costumes, + overall production value was impressive.
