Anna Bolena was a magnificent production, though it really did not deal adequately with Henry VIII's
real quarrel with the Catholic Church. His several wives reflected that quarrel. Imperious, ego-centric, dominant --a terrible control freak -- Henry eventually banished the Catholic control from England. Influenced, but not totally so, by the Protestant Reformation, Henry forged a new religious life in England. The Reformation there has been called an act of state. Anna Netrebko and Ekaterina Gubanova portrayed the tragedy of the situation superbly A little too long an opera (it could have been done just as well in 3 hours rather than 4), the music nonetheless was quite beautiful and the acting unparalleled.
