It's wonderful to be back in Tolkien's amazing world, to glimpse the events that lead up to the Lord of the Rings. All of the scenes with the elves in Rivendell alone were worth the trip for me, great stuff, and Sir Ian McKellen is a joy to watch as Gandalf, every moment. The bad, I am sad to report that the film offered too many contrived and crazy action scenes that were made for 3D (which I can't stand), where I didn't feel any of the characters were in any real danger. That said the film is a net positive, very fun, and all in all well worth seeing, though with 2 more movies to go it leaves us with a cliff hanger! An amazingly wonderful film, like a odd and quirky (almost) modern fairytale. One of my favorite movies of the year, if not my absolute favorite. Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward were refreshingly perfect as Sam Shakusky and Suzy Bishop, the two love-fated pre-teens. Great acting, wonderful dialogue and story. Must go! ...(read more)
