I went into "Flight" hoping for a movie that would explore the intellectual and ethical nuances of a complex situation. It turned out to be nothing of the sort; the only part of this film worth watching is the excellent plane crash sequence that was, expectedly, gripping. It's hard to get excited about a film whose protagonist is such an unapologetic alcoholic and drug user. But it was worse than that; interspersed were cheap moments of cinematographic fool's gold like the father-son confrontation at mother's house. The son — a hitherto undeveloped character — engages in silly posturing to prove his masculinity. It wouldn't work in the season's cheapest sitcoms, and it certainly didn't fly here. The romantic element of the film (because everyone knows that a good plane crash is nothing without some steamy love scenes) was also trite and contrived, as was the forced imposition of religion. What Argo lacks in historical accuracy it makes up for with a thrilling plot line that keeps viewers gripped to the final climax. Well acted and filmed, Argo doesn't make me suspend belief enough to keep me from remembering that this is based on true events. Bravo! ...(read more)
