One could do worse than Conan the Barbarian 3D. Is it high art? NO! When I attended there was
several children in attendance, about 8 to 10 years old. A bit young for this film. It has graphic violence (heads/arms lopped off; baby born by caesarian without the benefit of anesthesia or operating room) and nudity, sexual situations. Mamoa is a credible Conan. Mamoa more closely resembles Conan as described in the Robert E. Howard books. Mamoa brings a more handsome and animated visage to the character than did Schwarzenegger’s 1982 version. Conan’s nemesis played by Stephen Lang; a veteran character actor, much underrated (his portrayal of General Pickett in “Gettysburg” stole the movie), brought what little sophistication can be attributed to this film. Unfortunately not enough to be a must see film. While this film will win no awards (the plot is thin and the characterizations under developed) I come back to the point it was not produced to do so. It’s escapist fantasy – that’s all.
