Sweet, Sad, Scary, Simple, Striking
My family (composed of mom, dad, sons 15 and 20 and Swiss exchange student age 18) all liked this movie very much! Each one of us keyed on a different group of characteristics, but we all liked it as a whole. Contrary to some of the other reviews, the story is very simple; 9 awakens in a strange room, and not knowing any better, rushes out into a postapocalyptic world. Out of ignorance, he makes several crucial mistakes while coming to understand What Happened and How He Came To Be. The characters are archetypes (we all remember the playground bully, don't we?), but so beautifully drawn and voiced that they feel real to us very quickly, and when one is hurt we wince, and feel sad when killed. There are some fairly heavy handed moral messages in the film, and it often feels like an extraordinarily good student short film because of its simplicity, but it is absolutely worth seeing anyway. We all agreed that it is probably not a good movie for very young or sheltered viewers.
