In May 1998, after a long period of political and economic instability in Indonesia, students in Jakarta and Surakarta took to the streets, staging mass protests demanding government reform. After a period of chaotic violence (in which a number of students were killed and ethnic Chinese citizens were targeted with violence in attacks later traced to the Indonesian military), president Suharto resigned and a new chapter in Indonesian history began. To commemorate the tenth anniversary of these historic events, screenwriter Prima Rusdi brought together ten young Indonesian filmmakers to document their own impression of these events and their aftermath, and 9808: An Anthology of 10th Year Indonesian Reform collects the short films they created for this project. Anggun Priambodo's Where Was I uses still photos to look back to the events of May 1998. In Meet Jen, Hafiz profiles a man who has stubbornly remained unchanged by the uprisings. Lucky Kuswandi chronicles the celebration of a religious festival that was held in secret prior to the reforms in A Letter of Unprotected Memories. In Sugihart Halim, Ariani Darmawan takes a witty look at the political subtext behind her name. In Yesterday, Otty Widasari looks back at ten years of reform and how they've personally impacted him. Ifa Isfansyah visits a victim of the 1998 violence in Beijing in Happiness Morning Light. Steve Pillar Setiabudi's Our School, Our Lives is a study of secondary school students who've been inspired to take on corruption in their own institutions. A girl who is fascinated by stories about people's scars and how they got them meets a young man with a fascinating tale to tell in Trip To The Wound by Edwin. An Unfinished One from Ucu Agustin tells the story of a woman who is trying to find the person who shot and killed her son during a political demonstration in 1999.
