    Realism, not Melodrama

    I can see why 4 Months is so widely acclaimed. It's an emotionally charged powder-keg that deserves a permanent spot on your list of heavy-hitters. It's unique in its attempt to remain neutral on the social issues. It's realistic without falling into any of the trappings of melodramas posing as realism. It's engaging, but probably not destined to be anyone's favorite movie. Is there such a thing as too real?

    Controversial Subject!

    This film is set in Romania in '87 at the end of the Ceausesco regime. A young college student who is pregnant turns to her best friend for help. Anamaria Marinca is first class as the friend who in a pragmatic take charge manner goes above and beyond the call of duty to arrange and manage an illegal abortion, at great cost to herself. Superb directing from Cristian Mungio, excellent cinematography emphasising the stark, drabness of the times and of course the controvertial topic all make this a superb depiction of the dilemma. We all have strong opinions on this topic, so it is brave to take a risk and get into the murky ethical waters. The movie tells what happens without any opinion as to right or wrong but you cannot help being deeply moved by this story. Strong stuff, not for everybody, but well worth the time and money!

    Excellent movie, very disturbing, strong acting. Really deserved Golden Globe for a foreign movie.
