One of the worst of 2013

I cant believe there are some that actually liked this movie? I saw this the day before it's actual opening at a "sneak" preview at the Arclight Hollywood on Christmas Eve. I am a fan of the Samurai genre and was looking forward to this movie from the trailers I had seen. Unfortunately I was not aware of the production problems involved in making it. Whenever studio heads try to take creative control, it usually is the wrong move and when release dates are pushed back that generally means real trouble. On Christmas Eve I usually like to see a movie with a friend of mine. I wanted to see American Hustle but my friend noted that there was a sneak of 47 Ronin playing. As I was interested in the movie I agreed to see it. That turned out to be a bad decision. Instead of giving a long drawn out review here I will just direct those interested to a reveiw by Mark Olsen of the L. A. Times. His review is precisely what i felt about this movie. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND SEE SOMETHING ELSE.

It wasn't what we were expecting. It was very slow. If we had to do it again...we wouldn't have wasted our money, and would have rented it instead!

We enjoyed this movie. I will say it didn't live up to what I had built in my head. The first half of the movie moved pretty slow. But all in all we enjoyed the movie.

It was OK. Some moments were good but it could have been a lot better. I just couldn't really get into it. A mixture of not so good acting and a choppy flow. My husband fell asleep to it.

Beautiful colors, so-so CGI, but worth your time

This is "based" on a story about a group of Samuri who fight to revenge the wrongful death of their tribal lord. Interesting look at Japanese culture, and the subject is handled respectfully throughout. The subplot is how the "half breed" (Keanu) lives as a pseudo slave because he is not pure. This is where the story falls short: he is the lead character, yet you never really find out much about his parents. He was abandoned, and there is one sentence of information that is revealed about 3/4 of the way through the movie. The colors used in the film are exquisite-- I'm going to guess they are enhanced -- and are used to show good/evil contrasts, as well. Keanu is used well here; not a lot of spoken words for anyone, really, but we all know that Keanu plays best in action flicks (I'm a huge Matrix fan) that do not feature monologue or soliloquies. In summary, the film is prettier than it is "good," but enjoyable.
