Has IMAX become the new 3D? Do you like IMAX paired with 3D? What's your preferred format?
Both formats continue to perform well at local multiplexes. The two leading movies in theaters at the moment support IMAX (for Skyfall
) and 3D (for Wreck-It Ralph
). And filmmakers are mapping out 3D and IMAX components for future blockbusters, knowing that a contemporary audience prefers a few more bells and whistles with their theatrical presentation.
Case in point: Building off the recent success of Skyfall, The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man, IMAX has agreed to a new deal that will bring 20 upcoming Warner Bros. movies to the large-screen format in the coming years.
“The IMAX footprint continues to expand with tremendous success around the world,” said Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President, International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. “We are very pleased to be presenting our 2013 and future slate in this premium theatrical environment.”
Which begs the question: Which cutting-edge format do you prefer when heading to the theater to see a blockbuster? Studios likely will continue to explore both IMAX and 3D technologies moving forward. But if you had a choice between seeing, say The Hobbit in IMAX or 3D, which would get your vote?
