Amazing Singers! Great Stories About Classic Rock!

I felt as if I had just attended the best music class of my life after watching this film. The story spans the entire history of classic rock from the Beatles/Stones to the virtual disappearance of the backup singers in the late 90s, primarily for cost-cutting reasons. You get to hear interviews with legends like Mick Jagger, Sting, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, and others. They depended on their backup singers to create their innovative sounds. Think about some of your favorite songs, and chances are you'll notice how much you enjoyed listening and singing those parts as much as the primary vocals -- that's how I felt while I was sitting through this movie. Of course, the movie's primary focus is the backup singers, not the legends of rock. And, their story is real, and often sad, as they struggle to get closer to their dream of becoming the lead singers. I had a blast watching this film and I think anyone who loves music will too.

20 Feet from Stardom

Excellent movie. The story was compelling, very insightful and helps the music lover appreciate the role of the background singer. As one critic said, it takes more than a great voice to become the star out front! It's more luck, timing and the stars and planets aligning together. I remember Lisa Fischer, from the mid eighties when she came out with her solo project and always wondered what happened to her. Nothing !!, she's been working constantly and enjoying the reputation she has built as a vocal powerhouse to a host of legendary musicians. Darlene Love, Tata Vegas, The Waters, Merry Clayton, Judith Hill the background stories were fascinating. Loved It! I will tell any and everybody about this documentary. It is a must see!!!!!!

When I was a teenager, I remember honing-in on what the backup singers were bringing to the music and now I know why. The talent of the backup singers...they're as amazing (or more amazing) than the headliners. Root for the backup singers! I hope this documentary is nominated for an Oscar. And I hope it wins. It's that good.

This documentary traces the history of several truly gifted singers, most of whom toiled during the entirety of their careers as backup singers, but who could easily have been out front, if luck or the will to do it had been with them. It's particularly revealing to hear about Darlene Love, who had songs sung by her group, the Blossoms, released under the Crystals name, Those were some of the very best of Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound" records, but she was totally denied any credit for them for years. There were many great stories, including Merry Clayton's about being called in the middle of the night to sing "Gimme Shelter" with the Rolling Stones. This is a must for anyone who appreciates rock and soul music of the 60s and 70s.
