Superlative acting...gruesome story line, yet, it is History. How any human being(s) could be treated in that manor, is mind-boggling. The slave owners and their henchman will have to pay the price for the damage inflicted upon the less fortunate, as shown in this film.

At times it was difficult to watch. A lot of stirring, powerful scenes. Lots of human suffering. Left the theatre more grateful for my freedoms than when I had arrived.

This movie is very intense and I was very moved. Understanding that the movie was made from a book from the 1850s and knowing about the book's context helps. The performances of the actors are fantastic. The only downside I could see was that the characters were written a little one-dimensional - the southerners were bad and the northerners were good. But I understand that the purpose of the original book was to encourage the abolition of slavery, which is a good thing. I knew that slaves were mistreated, but to be shown graphically how bad it could be, is a good thing also. This movie is not for kids or the faint hearted.

12 Years a Slave was very well done. Can't imagine man being so inhumane to man. Good acting. It is NOT a movie to bring young children to.

This is a powerful story of a free man who is captured and sold into slavery. He is moved from owner to owner, some more just than others. Beautifully filmed. I saw it last night and have thought about it several times already today.
