True to the book.
The cinemaphotography added so much to a story that I will always remember....unlike the actor's name who played the starring role. Whatever his name is, this is acting at its finest.
This is the first time I've ever answered a Fandango inquiry about a movie I've seen.
Maybe the last(!). But I just couldn't resist, as 12 Years A Slave will, no doubt, become a classic.
Oh...If you have a weak stomach, just turn your head during the tough parts. Do not let that stand in your way!

An educational movie about the history of this country and its slaves, in which everyone in the USA and others from across the world should see. What I like about it most is that it seemed as if though you were actually there with them, and that they didn't leave out a lot of details that were needed to follow along. No sugar coating added, and this is greatly appreciated. They portrayed the movie like it truly was. The best actors that I have seen in a long time. This is a MUST GO, most definitely!

Visually and musically the film is stunning. Even if there were no dialogue, it provides compelling imagery that immerse the viewer in the time, place, and emotions of the characters. The photography is at turns jaw-droppingly beautiful and horrific.
The dialogue is almost Shakespearean, combining both depth and subtlety. Language is the most powerful weapon and the most volatile element in determining the fates of all in the film.
Historically, it helps to fill in the overly simplistic narrative of slavery in the US by showing the complexities of life for a diverse set of Black characters. But it also raises issues of class and power among white people that are rarely held up for scrutiny. It took a Black man from Britain to tell us about ourselves. But it's also a universal story.
My only quibble is the relatively pristine image of a color-blind life in "the North". But this probably reflects that it was a memoir targeted at Northerners.

Some one from Louisianna commented movie isn't showing and they think it's because they're from a southern state.... it's also not showing in my New Jersey area and I too am disappointed....so it's not just you. It opened Oct 18 and it now Halloween... where is it?

This movie was riveting! It did not bring me to full on tears because the story was so truthful, I found myself almost in shock that this type of injustice could ever exist and be depicted so vividly on screen. It's critical for all to see. The acting was superb. There was an interesting use of flashbacks to tell the story. Although there is nudity and implied sex, it's a history that young people need to see and understand.
